Apparently thieves in Cottonwood, Arizona are posing as grandchildren over the phone, asking their victims for bail money.  This has happened several times over the last year, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department.

The most recent scam happened this month when a woman called a 75-year old man and said she was his granddaughter.  She said she had been arrested in Canada and needed money to bail herself out of jail.  He wired over $5,000 to someone in Florida and found out later on that his granddaughter was fine; she had never been arrested.  These types of scams are difficult to investigate.

It is believed that con artists are getting information from places such as Facebook.  Many seniors are trusting and cooperative – good targets for scams.  It is wise to tell seniors about these types of scams and not to wire money to anyone.  If this happened to you or someone you love, contact an experienced Arizona Elder Abuse attorney who can investigate for you and hopefully get some justice.
