Elder abuse is a real problem in Arizona

According to statistics, Maricopa County has over 65,000 cases of reported and unreported elder abuse every year.  This number represents 54% of all cases in Arizona.  One of the most common allegations is self-neglect – shelter, food, water – are not given.  Other cases include neglect, financial, physical, sexual and psychological abuse.

If you suspect elder abuse or neglect is happening to someone you know, contact an experienced Elder Abuse Attorney.  No one should have to suffer abuse or neglect.  It is time this is stopped.

Man jailed for swindling elderly people

A man, tried to swindling elderly people in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, California, Texas and Kentucky is presently residing in a Redding, California jail.  The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Department arrested him for allegedly committing financial elder abuse totaling about $7 million.

Financial elder abuse is not the only crime committed – theft by false pretenses, grand theft and vehicle theft – are also involved.  The man offered to buy real estate totaling $7 million.  However, he did not have the funds to purchase it.  In addition, he pretended to be the owner of one of these properties and fraudulently took a victim’s vehicle as a trade.

Other individuals have come forward to say they were victims of schemes initiated by this man.  It seems there have been dozens of cases involving this man.  Most of the cases have been fraud by deceit.  What can we do to protect our seniors?

This program is part of the Attorney General’s Senior Sleuths project – a volunteer program designed to help seniors protect themselves against fraud and abuse.  This program works in conjunction with AARP, DES Division of Aging & Adult Services, and other Arizona senior organizations.
