Malnutrition and Dehydration for Elders

Comments Off

When we put a loved one in a nursing home, we expect the nursing home staff to provide proper care to that person, including good nutrition.  Nutrition and hydration are fundamental needs to survive.  It is unfortunate that sometimes these needs are not met.

Anyone with a loved one in a nursing home should learn the signs of malnutrition and dehydration.  When it comes to malnutrition, look for a change in eye color – either dull or very bright, swollen eyelids.  Other signs include tooth decay, swollen gums, sores or cracks around the mouth area, hair loss, weight loss and dry skin.  Regarding dehydration, look for vomiting, increased heart rate, sweating, problems breathing, dry skin, or seizures.

No one should have to live this way.  If you suspect a loved one is being abused in this fashion, contact an experienced Elder Abuse attorney who will investigate the care given at this nursing home and will protect your loved one’s dignity and rights.
